“A League of Their Own” Series from Abbi Jacobson in Development at Amazon

“A League of Their Own”

The Rockford Peaches are eyeing a return to the field. A series inspired by “A League of Their Own” is in development at Amazon, according to Variety. Reportedly “not a close adaptation” of the original, the new version of the story hails from “Broad City” co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham (“Mozart in the Jungle”).

The modern take will follow a “new version of the Rockford Peaches during the first season of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1943.”

It’s still early days for the Sony Pictures Television project — deals haven’t been finalized for the potential series, but “a mini-writers room is believed to be in place, ready to work on script,” Variety details.

Released in 1992, “A League of Their Own” starred Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, and Lori Petty. The Penny Marshall-directed dramedy sees the first-ever professional women’s baseball league launched when WWII threatens the fate of Major League Baseball. The iconic pic grossed over $132 million worldwide and offered audiences a rare chance to see a female-led sports movie.

“A League of Their Own” previously served as the source material for a 1993 CBS sitcom, but it lasted just five episodes before going off the air.

“Broad City’s” fourth season concluded in December. The Comedy Central stoner comedy will return for a fifth season with a premiere date TBA. Jacobson can be seen next in “6 Balloons,” a Netflix drama about a woman who discovers that her brother has relapsed on heroin. Written and directed by Marja-Lewis Ryan (“The Four-Faced Liar”), the film hits the streamer April 6.
