French auteur Agnes Varda will receive the 2014 Locarno International Film Festival’s (August 6–16) Golden Pard award, the Swiss event’s lifetime achivement honor.
The director of more than thirty films, Varda is often referred to as the “Mother of the French New Wave.” She began her film career with 1954’s La Pointe Courte and became a contributor and an influence to 1960s France’s cinematic revolution.
The Locarno festival will host a retrospective of Varda’s works, including Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962), The Creatures (1966), Lions, Love (…and Lies) (1969), Documenteur (1981), Vagabond (1985), The Gleaners and I (2000), and The Beaches of Agnes (2008).
Varda is the second woman to receive the Golden Pard after Ukranian director Kira Muratova in 1994.
