Amazon has made a multimillion dollar addition to its kids’ content line-up, signing a deal with American Girl to bring programming based on the doll brand’s characters to Amazon Prime later this year.
Amazon Studios’ head of kids programming, Tara Sorensen, hailed the American Girl deal as promising to create “a truly enriched on-screen experience” for Amazon’s young audience. “American Girl,” Sorensen said, “resonates strongly with kids and parents alike through its message of self-confidence, adventure, exploration and learning.”
Meanwhile, chief content officer for American Girl parent company Mattel, Catherine Balsam-Schwaber, was keen to praise Amazon Studios’ “focus on creating positive role models that both inspire and educate” as “an absolute perfect fit” for the toy brand’s mission.
Amazon will be producing four live-action specials, and there is potential for the deal to extend into multiple-season programming. The dolls serving as inspiration for the new shows will be drawn from American Girl’s BeForever series, which seeks to educate youngsters about various periods of Amercan history through era-specific characters, as well as from the Girl of the Year line.
