American Society of Cinematographers to Honor Nancy Schreiber of “Better Things”

“Better Things”

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) will recognize Nancy Schreiber with its Presidents Award at the 31st annual ASC Awards for Outstanding Achievement, Variety reports. The ceremony will take place on February 4, 2017 and honor Schreiber and the other winners for their work in movies and television.

Schreiber and her colleagues’ projects and credits are “varied, yet it all exemplifies a stellar level of achievement,” said ASC president Kees van Oostrum. Van Oostrum lauded Schreiber and her fellow winners for being an example for “great careers in the industry” and setting “creative standards of the highest order.”

Schreiber is the cinematographer of many series and movies, including “Better Things,” “The Family,” “Blue,” “Silver Skies,” “The Nines,” “The Comeback,” “Your Friends & Neighbors,” and “The Celluloid Closet.”

A high-profile win for Schreiber is much-needed, as female cinematographers have an especially hard time in Hollywood. A study analyzing 2,735 behind-the-scenes employees of 2015’s top 250 domestic grossing films found that women only comprised six percent of the films’ cinematographers. As we’ve previously reported, women are extremely underrepresented in cinematography and have even dealt with workplace hostility and sexism while on the job, but still believe things are slowly but surely changing.

Even so, it’s heartening to see Schreiber win a much-deserved award for her work. Between this accolade and the launch of CINEMATOGRAPHERS XX, a new, supportive group for female cinematographers, we’re optimistic that the tide is turning a little.
