Audra McDonald Joins “The Good Fight” as Series Regular

McDonald in "The Good Fight"

Audra McDonald will soon be fighting “The Good Fight.” Deadline confirms that McDonald is joining Season 2 of the CBS All Access show as a series regular. The Tony-winning actress will be reprising her “Good Wife” role, United States attorney Liz Lawrence.

McDonald’s character will receive additional backstory when she makes her “Good Fight” debut. “Liz will be revealed as the ex-wife of ‘The Good Fight’s’ Adrian Boseman, played by Delroy Lindo,” Deadline writes. “Over the course of the season, the two will have to deal with many of their unresolved issues.”

“We’re thrilled that Audra McDonald will return to the fictional Chicago of ‘The Good Fight,’” commented series EPs Michelle and Robert King. “After seeing her facility with both comedy and drama, we were dying for the chance to work with her again.” The Kings added, “Audra brings intelligence, strength, and wit to Liz Lawrence, the character she developed in the fourth season of ‘The Good Wife.’”

A spinoff of CBS’ legal-political drama “The Good Wife,” “Good Fight” follows Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) as she tries to rebuild her career at a new firm after losing her savings in a Bernie Madoff-esque Ponzi scheme. “Good Wife” recurrer Cush Jumbo also stars alongside Rose Leslie (“Game of Thrones”) and Erica Tazel (“Justified”).

McDonald has won six Tony awards throughout her career as a Broadway actress and singer. Her most recent win was in 2014 for “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.” The “Private Practice” star’s other screen credits include an HBO production of “Lady Day,” “Ricki and the Flash,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” In April McDonald was honored at Variety’s Power of Women: New York event. She was recognized for her work with Covenant House, a privately-funded agency that helps homeless youth.

Season 2 of “The Good Fight” is expected to premiere in early 2018.
