BBC Orders “Motherland” Comedy from “Catastrophe’s” Sharon Horgan

Sharon Horgan in “Catastrophe”: Amazon

The BBC has ordered a full season of Sharon Horgan’s new comedy “Motherland,” The Hollywood Reporter writes. Horgan is the co-creator and star of “Catastrophe,” which she has co-written every episode of. She’s also the creator of Sarah Jessica Parker’s upcoming HBO series “Divorce.”

The order is for six half-hour episodes of “Motherland,” and comes after a well received pilot starring Anna Maxwell Martin, Diane Morgan, and Lucy Punch. As THR writes, “Critics lauded the, at times painful-to-watch, realistic portrayal of the trials of motherhood.”

“I am thrilled and relieved to have finally found a good use for my 13 years of mothering,” said Horgan. “Apologies in advance to the brave women and men of the school run.”

“‘Motherland’ is a show all about navigating the trials and traumas of motherhood, looking at the competitive and unromantic sides of parenting — not the cute and acceptable public face of motherhood,” the BBC said.

Since “Catastrophe” is able to tackle pregnancy and a budding relationship in a hilarious and realistic way, it’s pretty safe to say that “Motherland” will bring the same realness, even if it is more caustic and biting, to the subject of motherhood. No word yet on whether or not the series will air on BBC America, or if a U.S. network or streamer will pick up the show, but here’s hoping.
