Bollywood Musical ‘Monsoon Wedding’ Heads to Broadway

Mira Nair’s Bollywood breakout hit “Monsoon Wedding” is one step closer to Broadway.

Playbill reports that the cast of the stage adaptation enjoyed a recent workshop and commemorated the night with the hashtag “#broadwaybound.”

Originally scheduled to open last November, “Monsoon Wedding” centers on “a stressed father, a bride-to-be with a secret, a smitten event planner and relatives from around the world during preparations for an arranged marriage in India.”

The book is written by Sabrina Dhawan and the musical features lyrics by Tony nominee Susan Birkenhead. Nair has been directing the industrial readings of the musical.

“Monsoon Wedding” is certainly a great opportunity for actors and performers of color on Broadway, as is the hit version of Gurinder Chadha’s “Bend It Like Beckham” on the London stage.
