“Broad City” to End With Season 5, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson Sign First-Look Deal with Viacom

“Broad City”

Ilana and Abbi’s New York City adventures are coming to a close. “Broad City’s” previously announced fifth season on Comedy Central will be its last, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. It’s not all bad news, though — the creators and stars of the stoner comedy will continue to collaborate. Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson have signed a new first-look deal with Comedy Central parent company Viacom and already have three projects in development. The pact includes Glazer and Jacobson together as well as individually.

“‘Broad City’ has been our baby and first love for almost 10 years, since we started as a web series. It’s been a phenomenal experience, and we’ve put ourselves into it completely,” the pair said in a statement. “‘Broad City’s’ always had a spontaneous pace and feeling, and ending after season five honors that spirit. We are very excited to bring new voices and points of view to Comedy Central and continue our collaboration together in new ways,” they emphasized.

The three projects in Comedy Central’s pipeline from Glazer and/or Jacobson are neither written by nor starring the duo. The potential series are “Mall Town USA,” an animated portrait of a 13-year-old girl going through puberty, “Young Professionals,” a look into the lives of five Washington-based housemates involved in politics, and “Platinum Status,” a live-action story about a gay man who hooks up with a woman after his long-term boyfriend dumps him. Both Glazer and Jacobson are serving as executive producers on the former two projects and Glazer will EP “Platinum Status.”

Glazer and Jacobson’s deal “will allow them to develop projects across Viacom’s television portfolio,” according to the source. It’s not exclusive and doesn’t include film.

Besides “Broad City,” Glazer has appeared in “Rough Night,” “The Night Before,” and Comedy Central mini-series “Time Traveling Bong.” Jacobson is earning excellent reviews for her dramatic turn in Marja-Lewis Ryan’s newly released Netflix addiction drama “6 Balloons.” The pic premiered at SXSW earlier this year. “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” and “BoJack Horseman” are among her other acting credits. She’s the co-creator of a series in development at Amazon that’s inspired by 1992 baseball classic “A League of Their Own.”

“Broad City’s” fourth season concluded in December. Season 5 is slated to premiere in early 2019.
