Chelsea Handler, Mary McCormack, & Cynthia Mort Teaming Up for “Unspeakable” at Hulu

McCormack in “In Plain Sight”

Chelsea Handler has never been one to shy away from taboo subject matter, and now the outspoken “Chelsea” host has found a project that promises to tackle topics that most media — and people — avoid. Deadline reports that Handler is executive producing “Unspeakable,” a single camera half-hour dramedy in development at Hulu.

The Mary McCormack-starrer follows a radically honest woman “trying to find her authentic self in a world where achieving an identity is never simple or complete, while simultaneously discussing subjects such as parental death, the decision not to have children, a harrowing near-death experience following a sudden illness, and many other thoughts that we might consider unspeakable in our culture,” the source writes.

Based on Meghan Daum’s 2014 book “The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects Of Discussion,” the project hails from “Tell Me You Love Me” creator Cynthia Mort and Working Title Television. Mort is penning the script and will serve as showrunner. Michael Morris (“Smash”), McCormack’s husband and producing partner, is attached to direct.

Handler, who acquired the rights to the book, recently announced that she’ll be signing off on her Netflix show, which ran for two seasons. She’ll be devoting her attention to activism, writing a book, and teaming up with the streamer on an original doc.

MCormack’s credits include “Angie Tribeca,” “In Plain Sight,” and “The West Wing.”
