Cher Musical to Hit Broadway in 2018

Cher in “Burlesque”: Stephen Vaughan/Screen Gems

Cher’s next stage appearance will be a little different from her usual Las Vegas performances. As Entertainment Weekly reports, Cher announced earlier this week that a musical about her life is in the works and will be making its way to Broadway in 2018.

A reading of the production — which media outlets are referring to as “Cher: The Musical” or “The Cher Show” — was staged in January. Three different actresses portrayed Cher at various points in her career. The Grammy winner’s late ex-husbands Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman are among the musical’s supporting characters, as are director Robert Altman and designer Bob Mackie. The musical also features renditions of “If I Could Turn Back Time,” “I Got You Babe,” “Believe,” and “Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves.” Cher attended the reading and later tweeted a glowing endorsement.

Jason Moore (“Avenue Q”) directed the staged reading of Rick Elice’s (“Peter and the Starcatcher”) book. Jeffrey Seller (“Avenue Q,” “Hamilton”) served as producer. Few details about the Cher musical are available, and neither the cast nor crew are set in stone. However, judging from Cher’s own reports, it seems that Moore and Elice will be involved in the upcoming Broadway production.

Cher has sold over 100 million records throughout her 50-plus-year career as a musical artist. Also an actress, she has appeared in films such as “Silkwood,” “Mask,” “The Witches of Eastwick,” “Mermaids,” and “Burlesque.” In 1988 she won an Academy Award for her leading role in “Moonstruck.” Earlier this year it was announced that Cher would topline and exec produce “Flint,” a Lifetime original movie about the water-contamination crisis in Flint, Michigan. However, she left the project in March for family reasons.
