Cicely Tyson Returning to Broadway in Silver-Haired Tragi-Comedy ‘The Gin Game’

Last week, Cicely Tyson earned an Emmy nomination for her guest appearance on “How To Get Away With Murder.” Now comes word that the busy actress is headed back to Broadway. Starting in the fall, she’ll star in the two-person tragi-comedy “The Gin Game,” which focuses on an elderly couple playing cards in a nursing home. Her leading man will be James Earl Jones.

“Doing all those performances a week stimulates me,” said 90-year-old Tyson. “I still want to run from theater to theater. The work itself gets me going. My first show was ‘The Blacks.’ 1961. Nightly, I’d discover some new bit. I’d think, ‘Where’d that little piece come from? Never noticed that before.’”

This recent Emmy nom is yet another accomplishment to add to Tyson’s extraordinary resume. She’s received 10 previous Emmy nods and has won three. She also received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role in 1972’s “Sounder.”

Tyson last appeared on stage two years ago in “The Trip To Bountiful” — a performance that garnered her a Tony for Best Actress.
