“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” Co-Creator Aline Brosh McKenna Has a New Project in Development

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” co-creator and showrunner Aline Brosh McKenna has a new female-led comedy in the works. She’s joining forces with two writer-producers from the Rachel Bloom-starrer, Rachel Specter and Audrey Wauchope. The trio have closed a deal with Paramount Players for an untitled comedy set in the world of law enforcement, according to an exclusive from Deadline.

Few details are known about the project, but Specter and Wauchope will pen the script and Brosh McKenna is set to produce.

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” concluded its third season in February. No word on whether The CW musical comedy will be returning for Season 4. Brosh McKenna signed a two-year overall deal with CBS Television Studios back in May 2017. Her big screen writing credits include “The Devil Wears Prada,” “27 Dresses,” and “Annie.” She co-penned “Cruella,” Disney’s upcoming live-action story about the villain from “101 Dalmatians” starring Emma Stone.

Brosh McKenna is the force behind one of our favorite Twitter hashtags, #FemaleFilmmakerFriday. She launched the social movement to celebrate female directors’ achievements and increase their visibility in the biz — to show girls and women examples of women behind the camera. Ava DuVernay, Jill Soloway, and Gina Prince-Bythewood are among those who have participated in #FemaleFilmmakerFriday.

“It’s good to show people there are people out there making their dreams happen, and that means everybody from a 12-year-old who’s out in the backyard with her friends and her iPhone, to people who are directing $100 million movies,” Brosh McKenna has explained. “I think you need to see all of that to see the next step for yourself. Because the next step for yourself might be film school. You know, it might not be becoming Ava right away.”

Specter and Wauchope have been writing partners for 10 years. They’ve written for shows including “Cougar Town” and “One Tree Hill.”
