“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” Co-Creator Aline Brosh McKenna Signs Overall Deal With CBS TV Studios

Aline Brosh McKenna: CBS Television Studios

This calls for a celebratory song and dance number. “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna is strengthening her relationship with the studio behind the critically acclaimed CW musical comedy series. Deadline reports that she’s signed a two-year overall deal with CBS Television Studios. The pact sees her developing new projects for the network and cable via Lean Machine, her production company.

“McKenna is one of the highest-grossing female screenwriters of all time with a combined box office total of over $850 million worldwide for films such as ‘27 Dresses,’ ‘Annie,’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’” Deadline writes. And she probably has her biggest commercial success on the way: McKenna co-wrote Disney’s upcoming live-action “Cruella,” starring Oscar winner Emma Stone. She also penned a graphic novel that will be published this fall, a contemporary take on “Jane Eyre.” It seems possible that the multi-hyphenate will start directing features sometime in the future — she’s helmed two episodes of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” so far.

“I try to avoid what I call fauxmergencies,” McKenna has said of her job as boss on the set of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” “As far as I’m concerned, if no one’s bleeding it’s not really an emergency because we’re just making a TV show.” Clearly that mentality is working out for her. The Golden Globe-winning series will return for a third season, most likely this fall.
