Dawn Hudson Signs New Three Year Contract With the Academy

Dawn Hudson’s early tenure at the Academy was tumultuous but let’s be real, it takes time to figure out how to run something this big, but also it takes the will of the board to allow a new leader to put his or her stamp on an organization. The good news is that she was allowed the time to succeed, and clearly people are pleased, because she has been given a new three year contract.

In her three years as the CEO (which was a new position) she has shaken the cobwebs off a very staid institution. She promised to work on the diversity issue, and she has brought in new members who are younger, are more female and more diverse to the mostly old, white and male rank and file. She had an open meeting for Academy members, and according to Deadline for the first time this year, all 24 Oscar categories were open to all members whereas previously committees handled certain nominations like the documentaries and shorts.

The Academy Awards themselves are on solid ground after this year’s success with Ellen DeGeneres as host, and Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will be back for a third time as the Oscars producers. And she’s also leading the charge on the Academy museum which is scheduled to open in 2017.

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs is up for re-election this summer for another year long term. Let’s see if we can get this partnership back again for another successful year.
