Denise Di Novi Books Second Directing Gig Before Her First Film is Released

Denise Di Novi’s directorial debut won’t be released until April 21, but the filmmaker has already lined up her second directing gig. Deadline reports that she will follow up Warner Bros.’ “Unforgettable” with Dreamworks’ “Highway One,” a female-led action thriller.

Dreamworks acquired the spec script from “The Shallows” screenwriter Tony Jaswinski for nearly seven figures, suggesting that the company sees “Highway One” as having excellent box office potential. The source mentions that the film “is expected to follow a speedy track,” another promising sign.

“Highway One” centers on a single mother, “a retired soldier who returned from Afghanistan with combat skills as well as injuries and PTSD.” She “must resort to extreme measures when her daughter is kidnapped during a cross country trip they take to start a new life.”

Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem will produce through their Weimaraner Republic banner. This is the same team that brought “The Shallows” to the big screen. “When Leshem and Harris set up their company, they said they would prize female-driven thrillers, and they expect this to be the second one that will bear their company banner,” Deadline writes. “The Shallows” grossed over $119 million on a budget of $17 million. Blake Lively starred in the shark thriller.

The producing duo approached Di Novi after they caught a cut of “Unforgettable.” The thriller stars Rosario Dawson and Katherine Heigl, and centers on a woman who is being tormented by her husband’s ex-wife.

Di Novi may be new to directing, but she’s a Hollywood vet with a career that spans decades. Her impressive resume as a producer includes “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” franchise, “Edward Scissorhands,” and “Heathers.” She’s one of the producers behind Lifetime’s remake of “Beaches.”
