Diane Keaton and Jacki Weaver to Star in Zara Hayes’ “Poms”

Diane Keaton and Jacki Weaver are forming a squad. Deadline reports that the pair have signed on to star in “Poms,” a comedy about women in a retirement community who start a cheerleading team. The project marks Zara Hayes’ narrative directorial debut.

Produced and financed by Sierra/Infinity, “Poms” will be shopped to buyers at Cannes this month. Shane Atkinson (“After West”) penned the script, and he and Hayes collaborated on the story.

Hayes is an accomplished documentary filmmaker who is best known for co-directing 2013’s “The Battle of the Sexes,” an exploration of the events leading up to the famous 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. A similarly-titled narrative version of the story — “Battle of the Sexes” — is set to hit theaters September 22. Emma Stone and Steve Carell star in the comedy, which is co-directed by Valerie Faris.

Kelly McCormick is producing “Poms” along with Mad as Birds Films and Rose Pictures’ Rose Ganguzza.

Keaton is a four-time Oscar nominee who won in 1977 for “Annie Hall.” Weaver received a nod in 2013 for “Silver Linings Playbook” and in 2011 for “Animal Kingdom.”

The past few days have brought news of a number of female-driven films with protagonists over the age of 60 — a welcome change of pace. Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Frot will star in “The Midwife,” a dramedy about the relationship between a midwife and the mistress of her deceased father, and Keaton, Jane Fonda, and Candice Bergen are set to topline “Book Club,” an indie comedy about lifelong friends in their 60s whose worlds are rocked after reading “50 Shades of Grey.”
