Drama Series Based on Mariah Carey’s Life Being Developed by Starz

Mariah Carey in “Mariah’s World”: E!

Mariah Carey is best known for two things: her incredible pipes and the fact that she’s an incredible character. Her amazing talent and larger-than-life persona have captivated millions for decades, so it comes as no surprise that a series about the chart-topping singer’s life story is in the works. Deadline reports that Starz is developing an as-yet untitled fictional scripted drama series “based on the the music superstar’s real-life experiences” and her “rise to fame.”

Set in 1986 New York City, the drama will chronicle the “rise of an ambitious bi-racial 16-year-old girl, an aspiring singer-songwriter who survived a difficult childhood to become the biggest selling female music artist of all time,” Deadline writes.

The Grammy winner’s biggest hits include “We Belong Together,” “One Sweet Day,” “Love Takes Time,” “Vision of Love,” and “Fantasy.”

Nina Colman (“Mahogany”) wrote the pilot and has signed on to serve as showrunner. She, Carey, Stella Bulochnikov (“Boss”), and Teri Weinberg (“Ugly Betty”) are among the project’s executive producers.

Carey’s acting credits include “Empire,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” and “Precious.” In 2016 she executive produced “Mariah’s World,” an eight part docuseries about her life on E! “I refuse to call it a reality show,” she said at the time. The pop singer, producer, songwriter, and actress explained, “I thought it would be a good opportunity to kind of, like, show my personality and who I am, even though I feel like my real fans have an idea of who I am. A lot of people have misperceptions about this and that,” she observed.
