Elizabeth Banks in Talks to Direct ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Reboot

After making her directorial debut with one of the summer’s biggest hits, Elizabeth Banks has been openly eyeing her follow-up project.

Next up on her slate might be a reboot of “Charlie’s Angels,” which began life in 1976 as a TV show (starring Jacklyn Smith, Kate Jackson and Farrah Fawcett) and was remade into two feature films in 2000 and 2003 (starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu). The premise, about three private detectives hired by an enigmatic millionaire only ever heard through the telephone, is apparently flexible enough to adapt to new times, or so goes the thinking.

It’d certainly be great to see a prominent female filmmaker working with the kind of action budget a “Charlie’s Angels” film would require. Made for $29 million, “Pitch Perfect 2” has grossed $285 million worldwide.

Banks will next be seen in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2,” out November 20. She is also in talks to helm her own potential YA dystopia franchise, Universal’s effects-driven “Red Queen,” about an urchin girl forced into marriage with the prince when it’s discovered she has the silver blood of the elite — and decides to foment a rebellion against them instead.
