Ellen Page and Kate Mara to Star in Forbidden Romance “Mercy”

Ellen Page in “Inception”: Warner Bros.

Ellen Page (“Freeheld”) and Kate Mara (“House of Cards”) are teaming up for Israeli filmmaker Tali Shalom Ezer’s “Mercy,” Variety reports. The actresses will also produce the romantic drama, Ezer’s follow-up to “Princess,” her critically acclaimed 2014 feature debut.

“Page is portraying Lucy, the daughter of a man on death row falling in love with Mara’s Mercy character, a woman on the opposing side of her family’s political cause,” Variety writes. “As a result, Lucy’s value for truth is tested as her world begins to unravel.”

Killer Films’ Christine Vachon and David Hinojosa will join Page and Mara as producers on the project. “Mercy” is scheduled to begin shooting in Ohio in September.

“We were so enthralled by Tali’s first film and have been looking to work with Ellen and Kate for years. This is the perfect project to bring everybody together,” Vachon and Hinojosa commented.

Page has previously said that she’s “focusing mostly on stories that are meaningful to [her] and stories for women and supporting more gay characters.”

The “Tallulah” actress is producing and co-hosting the second season of “Gaycation,” her Emmy-nominated Viceland docuseries. Page co-created the series, which she describes as an exploration of “what it means to be lesbian, gay, bi, or trans all around the world.” Season 2 will kick off September 7, but a “Gaycation” special on Orlando’s Pulse night club will be released August 24.

Mara’s recent credits include “Captive” and “The Martian.”

“Mercy” marks the second collaboration between Page and Mara, who starred in a 2014 Funny or Die parody of “True Detective.”
