Emma Stone Will Play Rosemary Kennedy in ‘Letters From Rosemary’

Emma Stone has reportedly signed on to star in Black List script “Letters From Rosemary.”

The story follows the life of Rose Marie “Rosemary” Kennedy, the eldest sister of President John F. Kennedy and Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy.

As Variety notes, the film will focus on the ill-advised medical procedure she was subjected to as a result of her father Joseph’s poor decisions: “After displaying behavioral problems that caused her to fall behind the achievements of her siblings due to a mental disability that was long kept secret, Joseph Kennedy arranged one of the first prefrontal lobotomies for her when she was 23. The procedure was botched and left her permanently incapacitated.”

Stone continues to show off her incredible acting range. Though she started out in goofy fare such as “Superbad” and “Easy A,” she has since moved on to critically acclaimed dramas including “The Help” and “Birdman,” the latter of which she earned her first Oscar nomination for.

The story of Rosemary Kennedy is a tragic example of how often misguided sexism can lead to irreversible consequences. Kennedy’s mood swings were indeed the result of problems stemming from a lack of oxygen at her birth, but for decades lobotomies were used to quell women who were deemed “insubordinate” or prone to “hysteria.” Hopefully this film will tackle some of those issues.
