Gabrielle Union to Topline “Bad Boys” TV Spinoff

Union in “Being Mary Jane”: BET

Mourning the imminent end of “Being Mary Jane”? The good news is that the show’s star, Gabrielle Union, will likely be returning to the small screen very soon. NBC has snagged a “Bad Boys” reboot starring the actress with a pilot production commitment. Deadline broke the news, and reports that multiple networks pursued the project.

The show will follow Union’s character from 2003’s “Bad Boys II,” Special Agent Syd Burnett, who has moved from Miami and now lives in Los Angeles. The LAPD detective “can pursue all the pleasures Los Angeles has to offer and leave her past behind,” the source writes. “But things will get complicated when her new partner, Nancy McKenna, learns that Syd’s unapologetic lifestyle might be masking a greater personal secret.”

Union is among the project’s executive producers.

“The Blacklist” writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier are penning the script. No word on who will direct the pilot.

“Being Mary Jane” debuted on BET in 2013. The drama follows an Atlanta-based TV news anchor. “Being Mary Jane’s” Season 4 finale aired in September. A fifth season isn’t happening, but the show will conclude with a two-hour movie that’ll serve as a series finale. It will air in 2018.

Union’s other credits include the “Think Like a Man” franchise, “Bring It On,” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” She’s currently filming “Breaking In,” a home-invasion thriller she’s starring in and producing. This October she released her first book, “We’re Going to Need More Wine.” The best-selling collection of essays touches on her experiences growing up in a predominantly white California suburb, her decades-long career in Hollywood, and her struggles with infertility.
