Gotham Award Nominations Announced: “Certain Women,” “Weiner,” and More

“Certain Women”

“Certain Women’s” profile continues to rise. The nominations for the 26th annual IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards have been announced, and the Kelly Reichardt-directed drama is among the nominees for Best Feature. Just days ago “Certain Women” was named Best Film at the BFI London Film Festival.

“Certain Women” is the sole woman-directed film competing for the award. The Montana-set story centers on the loosely connected lives of an attorney (Laura Dern), a married couple in the midst of building a home (Michelle Williams and James LeGros), and a rancher (Lily Gladstone) who forms a connection with a young lawyer teaching night school (Kristen Stewart). The critically acclaimed film made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year.

Kirsten Johnson’s “Cameraperson,” a visual memoir, scored a nod for Best Documentary, as did “Weiner,” a portrait of disgraced New York politician Anthony Weiner co-directed by Elyse Steinberg.

Anna Rose Holmer is the only female filmmaker up for the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. She’s being recognized for “The Fits,” her feature about an 11-year-old girl who becomes involved in a mysterious dance troupe.

Zero women-penned films are up for screenwriting awards, but girls and women dominate the Breakthrough Actors category. “Certain Women’s” Gladstone received a nomination, as did “The Fits’” Royalty Hightower. The other two female nominees are Sasha Lane for Andrea Arnold’s coming-of-age story “American Honey,” and Anya Taylor-Joy for festival hit “The Witch.”

Best Actress nominees include Annette Bening in “20th Century Women,” Natalie Portman in “Jackie,” and Ruth Negga in “Loving,” all of whom are favorites in the Oscar race.

The panel deciding the acting categories also voted to award a special Gotham Jury Award for ensemble performance to “Moonlight,” whose cast includes Naomie Harris (who is getting lots of awards buzz for her role in the drama) and Janelle Monáe.

Women-created TV series up for awards include Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and Melissa Rosenberg’s “Marvel’s Jessica Jones.”

For the sixth consecutive year, the festival will feature the Spotlight on Women Filmmakers “Live the Dream” grant, presented by euphoria Calvin Klein. The grant, which includes $25,000 in cash, “aims to further the careers of emerging women directors by supporting the completion, distribution, and audience engagement strategies of their first feature film or episodic series.” The nominees are alumna of IFP’s Independent Filmmaker Labs or IFP’s Screen Forward Lab. This year’s nominees are Shaz Bennett (“Alaska is a Drag”), Katie Orr (“Poor Jane”), and Roxy Toporowych (“Julia Blue”).

Twenty-nine writers, critics, and programmers were involved in the nomination process, and kudos to the Gotham Awards — it seems as though they made an effort to assemble inclusive committees. Committee members for various categories included Ann Hornaday (The Washington Post), Dana Stevens (Slate), Jessica Kiang (Variety), Sonia Saraiya (Variety), and Paula Mejia (Newsweek).

According to a press release, “Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in making films will determine the final Gotham Award recipients.” The Gotham Audience Award will go to one the 15 films nominated for Best Feature, Best Documentary, and the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. IFP members can cast their votes online beginning November 16.

The Gotham Awards ceremony will be held on November 28th at Cipriani Wall Street in NY.
