Gurinder Chadha’s Indian Independence Upstairs-Downstairs Drama “Viceroy’s House” Starts Filming

“Bend It Like Beckham” director Gurinder Chadha has begun rolling on her latest film, “Viceroy’s House.”

Set in 1947 New Delhi, the upstairs-downstairs drama will chronicle the tension that erupts at the home of the last British ruler of India, who kept 500 servants of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh faiths, six months before Indian independence.

Gillian Anderson will co-star as the Viceroy’s wife. “Downton Abbey” actor Hugh Bonneville will play Lord Mountbatten, the man responsible for returning India to its people. Huma Qureshi has joined the South Asian cast.

Chadha has written the script with Moira Buffini (“Jane Eyre,” “Byzantium”) and Paul Mayeda Berges. Chadha’s last film was “It’s a Wonderful Afterlife.”

The production will shoot for eight weeks in Jodhpur, India.
