“Happy Valley” Creator Sally Wainwright to Write and Direct BBC Film About Brontë Sisters

Veteran British TV writer Sally Wainwright will make her feature directorial debut with a two-hour BBC1 drama about the Brontë sisters.

“To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters” will center on a pair of authors who wrote two of the most enduring works of 19th-century English literature: Charlotte Brontë, who penned “Jane Eyre,” and Emily Brontë, who produced “Wuthering Heights.” The film will focus on their relationship with one another, as well as with their two other siblings — their younger sister Anne, who wrote “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall,” and their brother Branwell, who died of alcoholism and drug addiction — and their autodidact father.

BAFTA winner Wainwright created last year’s superb “Happy Valley” (BBC/Netflix), a feminist take on the police procedural starring Sarah Lancashire.

“The Brontë sisters have always been enigmatic, but Sally Wainwright’s brilliantly authentic new BBC1 drama brings the women behind some of our greatest literary masterpieces to life,” said BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore. “It’s an extraordinary tale of family tragedy and their passion and determination, against the odds, to have their genius recognized in a male 19th century world.”
