Janeane Garofalo to Make Broadway Debut in “Marvin’s Room”

Janeane Garofalo in “Love Hurts”

Janeane Garofalo is set to make her Broadway debut. The two-time Emmy-nominated actress and stand-up comedian will star in Roundabout Theater Company’s “Marvin’s Room,” The New York Times reports. She’ll take the stage this summer. The production will be directed by Anne Kauffman, who is also making her Broadway debut.

The play, which originally ran Off Broadway in 1991, “follows the uneasy reunion between two estranged sisters, one of whom has leukemia,” the source details. A film adaptation starring Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert De Niro was released in 1997. Streep received a Golden Globe nod and Keaton an Oscar nomination for playing sisters Lee and Bessie, respectively. Garofalo will be portraying Lee, and Lili Taylor (“American Crime”) will take on the role of Bessie, who needs a bone marrow transplant and asks Lee for help.

Garofalo’s film and TV career spans nearly 30 years, with credits including “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp,” “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce,” “24,” “The West Wing,” “200 Cigarettes,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Reality Bites,” and “The Ben Stiller Show.” She received two Emmy nominations for her role in “The Larry Sanders Show.” In 2012, Garofalo starred in “Russian Transport” Off Broadway.

“With more channels and more media outlets comes the ability of more people to work than when there were only three channels. But there are still rules for mainstream films, music, and TV. That’s the nature of it, that the ladies be attractive, young. The men have more leeway, they can look many ways,” Garofalo has observed. “If you want to see middle-aged women and older: British television. They’re very good about people looking many different ways.”

Both Garofalo and Taylor are 50-plus years old.

Kauffman’s previous directing credits include Off Broadway productions of “The Thugs,” “Belleville,” and “Smokefall.”

Previews for “Marvin’s Room” kick off June 8 and the play will officially open June 29 at the American Airlines Theater.
