Kathryn Bigelow’s Next Film To Tackle 1967 Detroit Riots

Academy Award-winning director Kathryn Bigelow’s next film will begin production this summer. The drama will focus on the 1967 Detroit riots.

As the BBC reports, “The Detroit riots began after police raided an unlicensed, after-hours bar and were some of the worst in America’s history lasting five days. During the disturbances, 43 people died and there were more than 1,000 people injured. Around 7,000 people were arrested and the president at the time, Lyndon B. Johnson, had to send in the army to stop the violence.”

John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”), who stars in the film, confirmed his involvement through his Instagram account, saying, “I’ve teamed up with Kathryn Bigelow for a movie based on the Detroit riots in 1967. Kathryn’s talent is undeniable and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with her on such an important story.”

Bigelow has teamed up once again with screenwriter Mark Boal for the project, which will be shot this summer for a release next year — the 50th anniversary of the event. Boal penned the screenplays for “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Hurt Locker.” Bigelow was the first — and remains the only — woman to win the coveted best Director Oscar, which she received for “The Hurt Locker.”
