Kerry Washington to Star in “The Perfect Mother”

Kerry Washington in “Confirmation”

Kerry Washington is in “final talks” to star and produce in an adaptation of a hot new book title for Sony’s TriStar division, Variety reports. The “Scandal” star would topline “The Perfect Mother,” based on Aimee Molloy’s debut novel. If you’re unfamiliar with the title, bear in mind that it hasn’t hit shelves yet. It’s still causing plenty of buzz: HarperCollins recently shelled out more than $1 million for the manuscript, and now the screen rights have been snagged. Clearly both the publishing and film industry see a lot of potential in the story. (Their eagerness likely has something to do with the fact that 2016’s “Bad Moms” grossed nearly $180 million worldwide on a budget of $20 million.)

“The Perfect Mother” follows members of a mommy-and-me group who swing “into action to investigate the kidnapping of one of their babies — but things aren’t exactly what they seem. Through the process of discovering the truth, damaging secrets are revealed, marriages are tested, and friendships are created and destroyed,” Variety summarizes.

No word on who will write or direct just yet. Joining Washington as producers are Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connor. Washington is expected to produce via her Simpson Street production banner. The actress previously served as executive producer on HBO’s “Confirmation,” which saw Washington portray Anita Hill, who famously fought against sexual harassment during the Supreme Court confirmation of Clarence Thomas. The drama received two Emmy nominations: Lead Actress for Washington, and Outstanding Television Movie.

Washington plays the lead character in “Scandal,” created by Shonda Rhimes. The political drama is currently in its sixth season on ABC. If you want to check out one of the iconic white trenches worn by Washington in her role as Olivia Pope, try to make it out to “The Power of Our Presence — An Exhibition Celebrating the 10 Year Anniversary of the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards.” The free exhibit is open to the public and also includes Tracee Ellis Ross’ scrubs from “Black-ish,” and other famous costumes worn by black lead female characters on hit TV series. “The Power of Our Presence” is now open at the Paley Center’s Beverly Hills location and will run until February 28.
