Kristen Stewart in Negotiations to Star in Survival Thriller “Underwater”

Kristen Stewart in “Café Society”

It’s looking like Kristen Stewart will topline a new blockbuster. After well-reviewed turns in indies like “Certain Women,” “Still Alice,” and “Clouds of Sils Maria,” the actress is in negotiations to star in “Underwater,” an adventure thriller from Twentieth Century Fox. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.

Described as “an underwater ‘Armageddon,’” the film “centers on an underwater scientific crew that, after facing an earthquake, are forced to go on a dangerous journey for survival,” THR summarizes.

If Stewart signs on, she’ll play “Underwater’s” lead — a “jaded and hardened crewmember.”

Will Eubank (“The Signal”) is directing a script by Brian Duffield (“Insurgent”) with a revision by Adam Cozad (“The Legend of Tarzan”). “Underwater” is being produced by Chernin Entertainment.

Production for the film is expected to kick off in New Orleans in March.

Stewart hasn’t starred in a blockbuster since 2012’s “Snow White and the Huntsman,” and she didn’t return for the sequel to the revisionist take on the fairy tale, 2016’s “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” So far, Stewart’s most commercially successful role has been playing Bella Swan in the “Twilight” franchise. The five vampire films grossed nearly $3.5 billion worldwide.

Back in January Stewart premiered her directorial debut, a short titled “Come Swim,” at Sundance. While promoting the project, she revealed that she plans to helm a short about gun control.

You can catch Stewart’s next film, “Personal Shopper,” in theaters March 10. The ghost story reunited her with her “Clouds of Sils Maria” director Olivier Assayas. She’s also signed on to star in “Lizzie” opposite Chloë Sevigny (“Big Love”). The psychological thriller centers on the story of Lizzie Borden, who was accused of murdering her parents with an ax.
