“Lady Bird” Makes Rotten Tomatoes Herstory as Best-Reviewed Movie Ever

“Lady Bird”

“Lady Bird” has soared all the way into record books. Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut is officially Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed film of all time, Indiewire confirms. The Saoirse Ronan-starrer currently boasts a 100 percent “Fresh” rating with 170 reviews.

The coming-of-age dramedy follows Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, a Sacramento-based teen who’s desperate to attend college in New York City. Laurie Metcalf (“Getting On”) co-stars as her mother, Marion. Described as “warm” but “also kind of scary” by Lady Bird’s boyfriend, Marion tells her daughter — who is half-convinced that she hates her — that she just wants her to “be the very best version” of herself. But Lady Bird is struggling to be her ideal self.

“[‘Lady Bird’ is] about grace, wholly unearned and mysterious,” Gerwig told us. “It is about how home becomes most vivid when you are leaving… It is about mothers and daughters and dances and religion and musicals and memory and grocery stores and parking lots and sex and messing up and realizing that whatever childhood was, now it’s over.”

The film made its world premiere at Telluride in September to rave reviews, and awards chatter has followed since. Ronan snagged a Gotham award yesterday for her performance. Gerwig was nominated for Breakthrough Director and Best Screenplay. Both women are up for Indie Spirit Awards.

“Lady Bird” dethroned “Toy Story 2” as the Rotten Tomatoes record-holder. The animated film’s 100 percent “Fresh” rating was based on 163 positive reviews.

You can catch “Lady Bird” in theaters now. It’s doing great numbers at the box office. Gerwig previously co-wrote and co-directed “Nights and Weekends,” and co-wrote the scripts for “Frances Ha” and “Mistress America.” She starred in all three films, but she does not act in “Lady Bird.”
