Lea Thompson’s Feature Directorial Debut “Year of Spectacular Men” Acquired by MarVista

“The Year of Spectacular Men”

“Back to the Future’s” Lea Thompson has made her way to the director’s chair. Her directorial debut, “The Year of Spectacular Men,” premiered at last year’s LA Film Fest. According to Variety, it has now been picked up by MarVista Entertainment for a June theatrical release.

The film follows college graduate Izzy (Madelyn Deutch) as she navigates dating, family, and adulthood. As she sees her sister and mother battle their own respective relationship issues, she turns to them whilst learning the importance of honesty and vulnerability.

“The Year of Spectacular Men” is, interestingly enough, a project led by a spectacular family. Thompson acts alongside her daughters, Zoey Deutch (“Before I Fall”) and Madelyn Deutch; Madelyn Deutch wrote and scored the film; and Thompson’s husband, Howard Deutch, and Zoey Deutch are among the film’s various producers.

MarVista CEO Fernando Szew emphasized that, “From our inception, MarVista has taken pride in supporting female filmmakers and voices. We are honored to be working with such a talented, creative and passionate group of women like Lea, Maddie, and Zoey, who also bring amazing dynamism as an inspiring family.”

Thompson has echoed Marvista’s sentiments. “We feel incredibly lucky that our vigor and energy for ‘The Year of Spectacular Men’ has been so genuinely matched by MarVista,” she said. “We can’t wait to release our film with a company who truly believes in and sees the value in telling an authentic millennial woman’s story.”

Thompson has directed various episodes of “Switched at Birth,” in which she also starred, and “The Goldbergs.” Future acting projects include high school comedy “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser” and Clare Niederpruem’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women,” which is set for release sometime this year.
