Liz Friedlander to Write and Direct Female-Centric Cop Drama for ABC

Jennifer Lopez as Detective Harlee Santos in NBC’s “Shades of Blue”

“Conviction” creator Liz Friedlander is looking to bring more women in blue to the small screen. Her as-yet untitled female-led police drama has received a put pilot order from ABC, Variety reports.

Described as a “character-driven procedural,” the project follows “the first female partnership in an elite division of the LAPD, where the two detectives use their particular set of skills to tackle the most high-profile cases as well as a system that doesn’t necessarily want them there,” the source writes.

Friedlander will pen and direct the pilot, as well as serve as executive producer. Earlier this year she helmed the pilot of a detective drama toplined by Sonia Braga for ABC, but the network passed on the project.

Hayley Atwell-starrer “Conviction” was cancelled during its first season on ABC. The drama centered on a rebellious former First Daughter of the United States working in law.

“Stalker,” “The Following,” and “The Vampire Diaries” are among Friedlander’s previous credits.

Other female-centric cop projects in the works include a drama in development at Fox from “Juno” screenwriter Diablo Cody and “Finding Carter” co-creator Emily Silver and a Melissa McCarthy-led movie about Boston’s first female cops in the 1970s.
