Lois Vossen to Lead PBS Doc Series ‘Independent Lens’

Longtime “Independent Lens” supervisor Lois Vossen has been promoted to executive producer of the PBS documentary series. This new role means that Vossen will be among the top-ranking overseers of PBS programs.

As Variety reports, the former deputy EP has led the way to an impressive 15 Peabody Awards in 12 years for the series. “Independent Lens” received 12 Emmy nominations this year alone.

Vossen has worked for PBS for nearly 20 years. She formerly served as the Associate Managing Director of the Sundance Film Festival and Sundance Lab.

In a statement, Vossen said that PBS has “renewed its commitment to independent film by increasing social media marketing and more funding to acquire streaming rights, allowing us to compete more effectively in the marketplace.”

The 14th season of “Independent Lens” will premiere November 9. The season will open with Debra Granik’s “Stray Dog,” an intimate portrait of biker and Vietnam vet Ron Hall. Granik is best known for directing “Winter’s Bone,” the film that catapulted Jennifer Lawrence’s career (and earned the young actress her first Oscar nomination).

Other titles scheduled for this season include Geeta V. Patel’s “Meet the Patels” and Erika Cohn and Tony Vainuku’s “In Football We Trust.”
