Margot Robbie to Star in “Marian,” Based on Character from Robin Hood Folklore

Margot Robbie in “Suicide Squad”

Ready to see Margot Robbie kick some more ass? The “Suicide Squad” actress has signed on to star in “Marian” for Sony, Deadline reports. Plenty of movies have focused on Robin Hood, but “Marian” will offer a fresh take on the folklore by putting Marian, who is often relegated to the sidelines as the brave and principled archer’s love interest, front and center. The spec script has been getting plenty of buzz, and the source describes the project as “truly gritty,” something akin to “Braveheart” or “Game of Thrones.” We are so ready see a female-led version of this kind of story.

“After a conspiracy to conquer England in which the love of her life Robin Hood dies before her eyes, Marian picks up the cause to lead her people into a pivotal war,” Deadline summarizes. “She comes to power, charging into a battle that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom but will see her don the mantle of the man she loved. In the process, she rises as a legend herself.” Pete Barry is penning the script. A director has yet to be named — here’s hoping for a woman.

Amy Pascal and Donald De Line are producing, as are Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment and Rock Shaink’s Romark Entertainment.

Currently filming “I, Tonya,” a biopic a comedy about controversial Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, Robbie has a packed slate. Her upcoming projects include a “Suicide Squad” spinoff for her character Harley Quinn and other female villains of the DC Comics universe, “Queen of the Air,” in which she’ll play a trapeze artist, and “Beautiful Things,” a thriller set in a zoo.

Among Robbie’s credits are “The Legend of Tarzan,” “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
