Maria Bello and Jessica Goldberg Team Up for NBC Drama About Doctor on a Remote Island

Bello in “Goliath”

Jessica Goldberg is switching gears from Meyerism to a medical drama. “The Path” creator has a new series in development at NBC, “Relief.” The project sees her teaming up with “NCIS” star Maria Bello, who conceived the idea with her. Variety broke the news.

The potential series centers on a “successful female doctor in L.A. who delivers supplies to her estranged brother on a remote island devastated by an earthquake,” the souce writes. “ A series of dramatic events propel her decision to stay on and become part of a group of volunteers from around the world who are saving lives and healing themselves in the process.”

Goldberg will pen the teleplay. Both she and Bello are among “Relief’s” executive producers.

Other series in development about female doctors include CBS’ “Love/Sick,” a comedy based on the South Korean series “Emergency Couple,” and an untitled NBC comedy about a Doogie Howser-like prodigy who has a breakdown, loses her medical license, and moves in with her estranged hippie mom.

“The Path’s” third season is set to debut on Hulu in early 2018. The drama follows members of a fictional religion — or cult — known as Meyerism, and stars Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”), Hugh Dancy (“Hannibal”), and Michelle Monaghan (“True Detective”). “Parenthood,” “Camp,” and “Refuge” are among Goldberg’s other credits.

Bello earned Golden Globe nods for her roles in “A History of Violence” and “The Cooler.” Her recent credits include “Goliath,” “Lights Out,” and “McFarland, USA.” In 2015 she released a book, “Whatever… Love is Love: Questioning the Labels We Give Ourselves,” an elaboration of topics covered in her November 2013 Modern Love essay “Coming Out as a Modern Family.”
