Michelle Yeoh Joins the “Star Trek: Discovery” Crew

Michelle Yeoh on “Marco Polo”: Netflix

The new and upcoming Star Trek series, “Star Trek: Discovery,” has added a new cast member, and we couldn’t be more excited about this addition to the cast. As THR reports, Michelle Yeoh will be joining Discovery’s crew, though it’s still a bit of a mystery as to what part she’ll play.

As we previously reported, the cast of “Discovery” has been set for a female lead. Former producer Bryan Fuller said that the show “will be led by a woman…with the role potentially also being diverse.” However, the character “will not be a captain, with the showrunner noting that decision allows the series to explore stories from a different point of view. The top-ranking member of the fleet will instead be a lieutenant commander, Fuller revealed late in the summer at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, adding, ‘but with caveats.’”

As THR details, “the rest of the cast also will feature an openly gay actor as one of the male leads (which Fuller confirmed), a female admiral, a male Klingon captain, a male admiral, a male adviser, and a British male doctor.”

Since no info has been revealed about which character Yeoh will be playing, by process of elimination we only have two from which to choose: the female admiral, or the lead commander herself. Either way, Yeoh is a great first step in creating another inclusive crew.

A Chinese-Malaysian actress, Yeoh became famous for performing her own stunts in the numerous Hong Kong action films in which she starred. She is well known in the states for starring in Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” She also appeared in Netflix’s “Marco Polo,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” and “Memoirs of a Geisha.”

Fuller stepped down as showrunner of the series last month and the new installment was bumped from an initial January premiere to May on CBS All Access, the network’s digital streaming service.
