Nia Vardalos to Adapt and Star in Cheryl Strayed’s “Tiny Beautiful Things”

Nia Vardalos in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2”

Nia Vardalos will return to theater next season, starring in “Tiny Beautiful Things,” a play adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s book, said The Hollywood Reporter. The play will run from Nov. 15 through Dec. 18 at The Public Theater and Vardalos is adapting the piece for the stage as well.

Strayed’s memoir “Wild” was adapted into a film in 2014 and starred Reese Witherspoon as the author on a trek across the Pacific Crest Trail. Witherspoon received an Oscar nomination for her performance.

Vardalos, writer and star of the “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” films, will play Sugar, “a hit online advice columnist who thousands of people have turned to for words of wisdom, honesty and hope.” Strayed remained anonymous for much of her time as online columnist “Dear Sugar,” but revealed her identity when she published the novel, a collection of some of her most profound pieces. Strayed’s deeply personal style of writing has touched millions of readers.

As the Public describes, “At first unsure of herself, Sugar finds a way to weave her own life experiences together with the deep yearning and real problems of her readers, creating a beloved column about the monstrous beauty, endless dark and glimmering light at the heart of being human.”
