“One Day at a Time” Renewed for Season 2

“One Day at a Time”

The Alvarez family isn’t going anywhere, thankfully. Netflix has renewed “One Day at a Time” for a second season, Variety reports. The first season of the Sony Pictures TV family comedy debuted on the streaming giant this January.

While the original Norman Lear version of the series, which aired on CBS from 1975 to 1984, was set in Indianapolis, the Netflix revival takes place in Echo Park, California. The updated version of the story centers on a Cuban-American family led by Penelope (Justina Machado), a single mom and military veteran raising two children (Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz) with the support of her mother (Rita Moreno). Lear is among the series’ executive producers, as are showrunners Gloria Calderon Kellett (“iZombie”) and Mike Royce (“Everybody Loves Raymond”).

Season 2 of “One Day at a Time” will consist of 13 episodes. No word on when to expect the next installment of the multi-camera comedy.

Machado has received awards buzz for her role in the progressive series, which has tackled subject matter like PTSD, white privilege, and sexism. Her previous credits include “Jane the Virgin,” “Queen of the South,” and “Six Feet Under.” Machado has been acting for 26 years and “One Day at a Time” marks her first leading role on a TV show.

“There have been times when I have maybe been right for something and, you know, the project is wonderful and it’s great but they’ve already hit their quota of people of color. And that is incredibly frustrating,” Machado told Vulture. “But those were rare. I have to be honest, I have been really, really blessed. And, yes, things have to change, but I have not really been put in a box in my career. And I think that’s mostly because I have an incredible team behind me who believe in me and who understands when I don’t want to do certain things or who fight for me to get in the room even if they don’t think I’m that person,” she explained.
