Open Road Acquires Reese Witherspoon Comedy Directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer

Open Road Pictures has picked up the North American rights to “Home Again,” Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s directorial debut, Variety reports. The romantic comedy stars Reese Witherspoon.

The story, penned by Meyers-Shyer, follows a newly separated single mom (Witherspoon) who finds herself in unexpected living conditions. She opens up her home to three younger men, and it’s not long before the household transforms into home, with the unlikely roommates forming an unconventional family.

“Home Again” co-stars Lake Bell (“Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp”), Michael Sheen (“Masters of Sex”), and Nat Wolff (“The Fault in Our Stars”).

Director Nancy Meyers, Meyers-Shyer’s mother, will serve as a producer. The project was also financed by Erika Olde of Black Bicycle Entertainment.

Witherspoon was initially slated to star in Meyer’s “The Intern” before scheduling conflicts led her to exit the project. Her role was ultimately filled by fellow Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, and the comedy grossed nearly $195 million on a budget of $35 million.

“‘Home Again’ is a funny and sparkling script that will be brought to life by the incomparable Reese Witherspoon,” commented Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg. “Nancy Meyers has brought audiences some of their all-time favorites and has a proven track record at the box office. We are proud to be in business with this family and the entire team.”

The film is slated to kick off production this fall, and is eyeing a release for late 2017.

Witherspoon recently joined the cast of Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time.” The film adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s beloved sci-fi novel marks the first time a woman of color has helmed a live-action feature with a budget over $100 million.
