Oprah Winfrey Joining Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time”

Oprah Winfrey in “Selma”: Paramount

Oprah Winfrey is joining the cast of Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” Variety has reported. The media mogul is in final negotiations to appear in the Disney adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s book. This would mark the second time Winfrey has acted for DuVernay; she appeared in 2014’s “Selma.” Winfrey and DuVernay also teamed up to co-create OWN’s upcoming family drama “Queen Sugar.”

“Frozen” co-writer and co-director Jennifer Lee is writing the script for “A Wrinkle in Time.” The story follows a young girl who travels through time and space to find her missing scientist father. Earlier this year, the project put out casting calls for mixed-race and ethnically diverse children to play the three lead roles. According to Variety, Winfrey would be playing “one of the three Mrs. Ws,” a character that helps them along on their journey.

Winfrey is diving back into the acting world since her long-running talk show ended in 2011. Nourished by starring in 1985’s “The Color Purple” and 1998’s “Beloved,” an adaptation of Toni Morrison’s novel, Winfrey’s acting has remained a presence in her life while becoming the queen of talk TV. Notable recent roles came in “Selma” and “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Also in the works for Winfrey is HBO’s “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” which tells the true story of an African-American woman whose cells were used to create the first immortal human cell line. Winfrey is playing Deborah Lacks, Henrietta’s daughter, whose “search to learn about the mother she never knew and to understand how the unauthorized harvesting of Lacks’ cancerous cells in 1951 led to unprecedented medical breakthroughs, changing countless lives and the face of medicine forever. It’s a story of medical arrogance and triumph, race, poverty and deep friendship between the unlikeliest of people.”

It’s exciting that Winfrey is acting more and more these days, and we can’t wait to see what her talents bring to these very different projects.
