“Queen Sugar” Names Monica Macer as Season 2 Showrunner

“Queen Sugar”: OWN

“Queen Sugar” is getting a new showrunner for Season 2, Deadline reports. With creator, executive producer, and co-showrunner Ava DuVernay having to turn her attention to Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” the OWN series has to bring in someone new.

Deadline writes that the job is going to Monica Macer, former co-executive producer of “Nashville.” She also acted as co-executive producer on the upcoming VH1 drama “The Breaks,” and has credits on “Prison Break” and “Lost.”

“I am delighted that Monica is joining the ‘Queen Sugar’ family, adding her unique voice and creative vision to the Bordelon siblings’ journey for Season 2,” said DuVernay. “With our successful series launch well underway, we are fortunate to be able to include Monica as we prepare for all of the great things to come in the next season.”

“Queen Sugar,” which is also executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, follows the story of the three Bordelon siblings running their father’s sugarcane farm in rural Louisiana. Rutina Wesley plays Nova, a journalist and herbal healer; Dawn-Lyen Gardner plays eldest half-sibling Charlie, whose celebrity basketball player husband is involved in a sexual assault case; and Kofi Siriboe plays Ralph Angel, a former convict raising his young son.

“We are incredibly proud of the success of ‘Queen Sugar and happy to welcome Monica to the team as we embark on Season 2,” said Erik Logan, President of OWN. “She brings tremendous storytelling experience to the table, and will be a great addition to the show.”

“Queen Sugar” had the highest-rated two-night premiere in OWN history when it kicked off last month. Season 2 will also have more episodes, coming in at 16 rather than Season 1’s 13. DuVernay hired an all-female directorial team for Season 1, and recently confirmed with Women and Hollywood that all of Season 2’s episodes will be directed by women.
