Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams-Starrer “Disobedience” Acquired by Bleecker Street

“Disobedience”

“Disobedience” has found a home following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival a few weeks back. Deadline reports that Bleecker Street snagged the U.S. distribution rights to the well-reviewed Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams-starrer about a forbidden romance.

An adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel of the same name, the drama sees Weisz’s character, Ronit, returning to the Orthodox Jewish community she grew up in after her father, a revered rabbi, dies. She left the extremely religious enclave in London behind for a secular life in New York City, and she’s not welcomed back with open arms. Already considered a black sheep, Ronit is the source of even more controversy when she rekindles her intense connection with a childhood friend, played by McAdams.

Weisz is among the film’s producers. Rebecca Lenkiewicz (“Ida”) penned the screenplay alongside the film’s director, Sebastián Lelio (“Gloria”).

No word on when “Disobedience” will hit theaters.

Weisz won an Oscar in 2006 for “The Constant Gardener.” Her recent credits include “Denial,” “Youth,” and “The Lobster.” McAdams received an Oscar nod last year for “Spotlight.” “Doctor Strange,” “True Detective,” and “Southpaw” are among her recent credits.
