Regina King to Star in Veena Sud’s “Seven Seconds” for Netflix

Regina King in “The Leftovers”: HBO

Regina King is taking her television dominance to Netflix. As THR reports, King has signed on to star in the streaming network’s crime drama “Seven Seconds.”

The series comes from “The Killing” creator Veena Sud and, as we previously reported, will explore the tensions and conflicts “between African-American citizens and Caucasian cops in Jersey City, where a teenage African-American boy is critically injured by a cop.” Gavin O’Connor (“The Accountant,” “The Americans”) is set to direct the pilot.

THR goes into more detail on King’ character, writing that she’ll play “Latrice Butler, a devout churchgoer and proud wife and mother. After she and her family move out of the projects and become first-time homeowners, Latrice is shaken to her core when she learns that her 15-year-old son, Brenton, has been involved in an incident. Suddenly aware that there’s more to Brenton than she and her husband were aware of, Latrice is rocked by the power of her anger at her son’s predicament, an anger that will change her life, her relationship with her husband, and more.”

King has had a slew of excellent television roles the past couple of years. She joined the second season of HBO’s “The Leftovers” and will also appear in the third. She also starred in the first two seasons of the anthology series “American Crime,” for which she earned back-to-back Emmy Awards. She’s set for that third season as well. She’s also an experienced TV director, having helmed episodes of “Scandal,” “Being Mary Jane,” and “Greenleaf,” among others.

Sud will act as showrunner for “Seven Seconds.” King joins a cast that already includes David Lyons, Michael Mosley, Russell Hornsby, and Beau Knapp. Hopefully the cast will include plenty of women, too.
