Sally Potter’s “The Party” to Star Patricia Clarkson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Cherry Jones

Patricia Clarkson in “Learning to Drive”

Patricia Clarkson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Cherry Jones, and Emily Mortimer are set to star in Sally Potter’s “The Party,” Variety has reported. That means that three-quarters of the female leads are over 50 years old, which is definitely something to celebrate. (Mortimer is 44.)

The film just began a swift 14-day shoot in London. “Set in a house in contemporary London,” Variety writes, the film is “a comedy wrapped around a tragedy. It starts as a celebration and ends with blood on the floor.”

“The Party” will also star Bruno Ganz, Cillian Murphy, and Timothy Spall.

This will mark Potter’s eighth feature film. She’s best known for her 1992 adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando,” which starred Tilda Swinton. The film received two Oscar nominations.

Potter’s other notable films include BAFTA-nominated “The Tango Lesson,” “Yes” with Joan Allen, “The Man Who Cried,” starring Christina Ricci and Cate Blanchett, “Rage” with Judi Dench, and “Ginger & Rosa,” starring Elle Fanning and Alice Englert.
