Saoirse Ronan to Star in Greta Gerwig’s Directorial Debut ‘Lady Bird’

A double dose of good news: As previously announced, Greta Gerwig is set to make her solo directorial debut, and now we know that Saoirse Ronan will star in it. “Lady Bird” will see the “Brooklyn” star playing a Sacramento-based high-school senior spending her last year in her hometown (presumably she’s college-bound).

Gerwig will pen the script for the feature. She previously co-wrote (and starred in) 2012’s “Frances Ha” and last year’s “Mistress America” with Noah Baumbach, who directed both comedies. She also co-wrote and co-directed 2008’s “Nights and Weekends.”

Ronan has been the subject of much Oscar buzz ever since “Brooklyn” debuted at Sundance 2015. The Irish actress has indeed landed a nomination (and is second most likely, after “Room” leading lady Brie Larson, to win). Consequently, her name is gaining serious traction and star wattage.

Gerwig stars in two films screening at Sundance 2016: “Wiener-Dog” and Rebecca Miller’s “Maggie’s Plan.”

IAC Films is financing “Lady Bird.”
