Sarah Shahi Cast as Nancy Drew in New CBS Series

Sarah Shahi (“Person of Interest, “Fairly Legal”) has been announced as the star of CBS’s “Drew.” The Texas-born Persian actress will portray iconic detective Nancy Drew in the network’s pilot, which is based on the bestselling book series. The drama is set in the modern world.

When the series kicks off, Nancy, who is in her 30s, works as an NYPD detective. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Nancy joins “the NYPD after college, where she was named the youngest female NYPD homicide detective. She was a star — until she arrested the wrong guy, was publicly called on it and quit the force. ‘Drew’ will find her struggling to find a way back to the confident character she’s best known as to audiences worldwide.”

As is the case with the novels and other adaptations, Nancy grew up solving mysteries using her keen observational skills with childhood friends George and Bess. Vanessa Ferlito (“Graceland”) has been cast as George, but we’ll have to wait to find out who will play Bess in “Drew.”

“Drew” is co-written and executive produced by Joan Rater (“Grey’s Anatomy”).

Nancy Drew made her debut in print in 1930, and while the character was created by Edward Stratemeyer, the first “Nancy Drew” book was written by newspaper woman Mildred Wirt Benson, who penned a number of other novels in the series. Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, Stratemeyer’s daughter, later took the reins as the main author of the series.
