Sarah Silverman’s ‘I Smile Back’ and Two Other Female-Centric Films Land Distribution

Three female-centric dramas are heading to the big screen.

“I Smile Back,” which stars Sarah Silverman as a self-destructive wife and mother, will be distributed by Broad Green Pictures. “Sarah’s raw and vulnerable performance will astonish audiences and define her as an incredible dramatic talent,” commented Gabriel Hammond, CEO of BGP, and Daniel Hammond, BGP Chief Creative Officer. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to give ‘I Smile Back’ the platform to impact audiences the same way it did us.” No release date has yet been announced.

Israel Cárdenas and Laura Amelia Guzmán’s interracial lesbian drama “Sand Dollars,” about a relationship between an older, European woman and a younger, Dominican not-quite-prostitute, will be released at the end of the year by Breaking Glass Pictures. “The film is a gorgeous meditation on old age, loneliness, and love, anchored by a luminous performance by the exquisite Geraldine Chaplin. We’ve been pursuing the film since TIFF, and Ventana Sur and I are overjoyed to bring its beauty to North American audiences,” said Breaking Glass Co-President Richard Ross.

This year’s Sundance opener, Alanté Kavaïté’s “The Summer of Sangaile,” is another kind of love story between two females. The film, which earned its female director the directing prize in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition, follows two teenage girls — one of whom is obsessed with stunt planes despite her fear of heights — as they grow closer and share intimate secrets with one antoher. Strand Releasing is planning on a late-summer release. “This film captures a delicate coming-of-age tale, much like Lukas Moodyson’s classic, ‘Show Me Love,’” said Strand’s Jon Gerrans in a statement.
