Sofia Coppola to Direct Opera in Rome

Back in December Sofia Coppola made her musical directorial debut with the Netflix special “A Very Murray Christmas.” Now the Oscar winner is taking on another music-centric endeavor: directing her first opera. The “Lost in Translation” helmer will direct a new production of “La Traviata” at the Rome Opera.

“La Traviata” is set in 18th-century Paris. The tragedy focuses on a young courtesan willing to risk everything for love.

Coppola was approached for the job by famed fashion designer Valentino Garavani, who was hugely impressed with her work in the undeniably gorgeous “Marie Antoinette.” Valentino, a patron of the Opera, will create the sure-to-be-stunning costumes for the production.

The Opera’s general manager, Carlo Fuortes, praised Coppola’s “distinctive sensitivity and musical aesthetic,” as well as her skill in striking the perfect balance between “the classic and the modern.” The Guardian reports that the production will take inspiration from the medium Coppola remains best known for — film.

15 shows are planned for “La Traviata,” beginning May 24 and ending June 30.
