Sundance Winner “Night Comes On” Acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films

“Night Comes On”: Samuel Goldwyn

Jordana Spiro’s feature directorial debut has found a home. Deadline reports that Samuel Goldwyn Films secured North American distribution rights to “Night Comes On.” The drama about sisters made its world premiere at this year’s Sundance, where Spiro took home the NEXT Innovator Award.

Written by Spiro and Angelica Nwandu, “Night Comes On” centers on Angel (Dominque Fishback, “The Deuce”) a 17-year-old who is released from juvenile detention the day before she turns 18. “Haunted by her past, Angel embarks on a journey with her little sister (Tatum Marilyn Hall) to avenge her mother’s death.”

Best known as an actress, Spiro’s on-screen credits include “Ozark,” “Blindspot,” and “The Good Wife.” She previously directed shorts “Skin,” “Exit the Castle,” and “The Off Track.”

“I wanted to create a story with a strong female protagonist who was in the midst of an existential crisis,” Spiro told us just before “Night Comes On” hit Sundance. “At the same time I was volunteering with an incredible organization called Peace4Kids that provides a safe community for foster youth to grow and discover their greatness. I learned so much about resilience and bravery amidst trauma through these young people.” She added, “Because that background was not my own, it was imperative to collaborate with a writer who could understand the uniqueness of this background firsthand. Once I began co-writing with Angelica Nwandu — whom I met through P4K — the script came to life.”

“Night Comes On” is slated to hit theaters sometime this summer.
