Alicia Vikander and Riley Keough Teaming Up for Noir Thriller “The Earthquake Bird”

Vikander in “Tomb Raider”

Alicia Vikander and Riley Keough are heading to Japan. The new Lara Croft and the “American Honey” actress are in talks to topline Netflix noir thriller “The Earthquake Bird,” based on Susanna Jones’ Tokyo-set novel of the same name. Deadline broke the story.

From writer-director Wash Westmoreland (“Still Alice”), the pic “tells the story of young female expat who is suspected of murder after her friend goes missing in the wake of a tumultuous love triangle with a handsome local photographer.”

Production is set to kick off in Tokyo and Sado Island in May. Ann Ruark (“Thank You for Your Service”) and Georgina Pope (“The Forest”) are among the project’s producers.

Vikander stars as adventurer Lara Croft in “Tomb Raider,” in theaters now. The Academy Award-winning actress is set to star in kidnapping thriller “The Marsh King’s Daughter” next. Vikander started her own production company, Vikarious Productions, in 2016. Its first film, “Euphoria,” which centers on two sisters catching up after years of estrangement, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.

Keough was nominated for a Golden Globe for her lead performance in Starz series “The Girlfriend Experience.” She portrayed Christine Reade, a law student turned sex worker, in the anthology show’s first season. Keough received a nod at the 2017 Indie Spirit Awards for her work in Andrea Arnold’s “American Honey.” Crime thriller “Under the Silver Lake” and “Paterno,” an HBO movie about the disgraced Penn State coach, are among her upcoming projects.
