TIFF 2017: Coralie Fargeat’s “Revenge” Acquired by Shudder

“Revenge”: TIFF

“Revenge” has found a home in advance of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. AMC Networks’ Shudder snagged the North American, U.K., Ireland, and Australian rights to Coralie Fargeat’s feature film debut, Variety reports. Scheduled to premiere September 10 at TIFF, the film centers on Jen (Matilda Lutz, “Rings”), a woman who goes on vacation to a remote desert villa with her married, millionaire boyfriend. Their weekend takes an unexpected turn when his hunting friends arrive and prey on her. But “Revenge” isn’t a story about Jen’s victimhood — it’s about the revenge she exacts on her attackers. Fargeat penned the script.

Expected to hit theaters in early 2018, the film will also be available on Shudder, a streaming service dedicated to genre projects. According to the source, with “Revenge,” Fargeat “reframes the genre’s typical proclivities with a gaze that scrutinizes male bodies and foregrounds its protagonist’s transformation into a hardened vehicle of vengeance.”

Aurelie de Troyer, Shudder’s vice president of global acquisitions, commented, “Coralie’s take on the vengeance motif is so refreshing, it revitalizes the genre as a whole.”

“As a true fan of genre films, I am extremely proud that my first feature is being released by Shudder,” Fargeat said. “Having the support of such an impressive new player within the genre space will help the film find an enthusiastic and passionate audience.”

Alice Lowe’s “Prevenge,” a dark comedy about a mom-to-be on a killing spree, marked Shudder’s first theatrical release.

Fargeat’s credits include shorts “Reality+” and “Le télégramme.”

“Revenge” is one of just two women-directed or co-directed films screening in TIFF’s Midnight Madness program.
